New Demo Home Cinema Room Week 7
Timber Work
It’s week 7 of working on our home cinema demo room build. This week we finish out boxing the office/workshop space out. Fit the double oak doors, start framing out the main cinema ready for our acoustic fabric system and then start the painting.
Our workshop and office is located on one side of the building opening out to the demo room on the other side.
Oak Double Doors
Our Double Doors Get their Oak Architrave, Architrave is a type of interior moulding that sits around the frame of a doorway.
We used acoustic sealant around the door which will help keep noise down (and in).
Additionally we will be utilising bat wings and other acoustic solutions to minimise air gaps between our cinema/workshop and the outside. We may use an acoustic drop down seal which can be routered directly into the bottom of the door
If we have a low ambient noise level in the room then we don’t need to turn the amplifier volume up as high. Audio dynamics are greatly improved and its much better for our hearing.
Acoustic Treatment
We finalise the acoustic treatment design, having decided on a carpet finish rather than the wooden floor alternative we add a little diffusion/scattering and take away some of the absorption on the side walls. The carpeted floor will provide added absorption that would mean we were heavy on the side absorption treatments.
Typically and it will depend on your acoustic design you wouldn’t want more than around 20% of walls treated with absorption, it can start to sound a little dead and lifeless. Adding the right amount of diffusion, scattering and reflective surfaces in the right places will bring it back to life. The trick is to get the balance right and listen to the room.
Painting The Room
On the last day of the week we get round to finally painting the room.
The bulkhead is going to be painted in a matt slate grey. We use a dark colour and a matt finish so that it minimises any reflections from the screen.
Less distractions equals better immersion, the more you’re immersed the better the experience, you can feel completely involved in the movie, part of what’s happening on screen.
We also want the room to be as dark as possible once the lights have been dimmed, this makes the projected image really pop from the screen and look stunning.
